There are several possible meanings to the question, “How can I become like God?”
Do You Want to Be a God?
But first, no one can become like God. The Bible tells us that an angel named Lucifer once wanted to become like God. In response, God threw him out of heaven because of his pride. In his fallen state, we know him as Satan or the Devil. Here is the Bible passage.
How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth . . . you said in your heart, “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, to the recesses of the pit.” Isaiah 14:12-15 (NASB)
Ezekiel 28:13-14 tells us that Lucifer was a beautiful angel and due to his own pride, he desired to become like God. During his rebellion, he convinced one-third of the angels in heaven to help him defeat God (Revelation 12:3-4). He was proud, and the other rebellious angels were extremely wicked and foolish. Imagine trying to defeat the God who created you. Satan wanted the glory and power of God. The Bible calls such a desire sin.
The Bible also tells us that there is only one God, and there will never be another God,
I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God besides Me. Isaiah 44:6 (NASB)
Before Me there was no God formed,
And there will be none after Me.
I, even I, am the LORD,
And there is no savior besides Me.
Isaiah 43:10b-11 (NASB)
God is the first and He will also be the last. There have never been any other gods before or after Yahweh, who is the God of the Old Testament. This message is repeated in Isaiah 45:5, 14b, 21 and Isaiah 46:9. This means that you cannot become a god. There will never be any other gods. This means that no Christian has ever become a god and none will ever be able to become one.
The Mormon doctrine that claims we can become a god of some planet in the universe is not and cannot be true. Most people do not know that Josepeh Smith, who started the cult called Mormonism, plagarized portions of the Old Testament when he created the Book of Mormon. That book has been changed 3,913 times to eliminate conflicts with current Mormon teaching.
Do You Want to Live Like Jesus?
The second possible meaning to your question is that you desire to become more like Jesus each day. In order to become more like Jesus, our God, we must first believe that He and He alone is God, our Lord and Savior. The proof that you actually believe that, is you will want to please Him and want to change how you conduct your life. God calls us repeatedly throughout Scripture to live a holy life. Most people try to change their behavior by their own willpower, but that is not possible without God’s help.. Philippians 2:12-13 explains that we must desire to grow spiritually. We must depend on God to change us.
So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:12-13 (NASB)
This change requires that we must be willing to spend time regularly reading the Bible, praying, fleeing sin, and asking that the Holy Spirit fill our lives each day. This requires commitment and submission to God (Romans 10:9). We would encourage you to read the following, “What is the meaning of work out your salvation which God is working within you?,” and “Seeking God’s Will.” God calls us to be holy as He is holy,
But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “ YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.” 1 Peter 1:15-16 (NASB)
Conclusion:
The answer to your question is that there is no way you can become like God. But you can join Him in heaven some day if you will recognize that you are a sinner and believe Christ suffered in your place by dying on a cross. He suffered in your place so that your sins could be forgiven. People are born sinners and going to hell unless they believe Jesus is God and accept Him as their Lord and Savior (John 8:24, 34-36). Only by believing that Jesus paid the penalty that we deserve, and desiring to be forgiven, can a person go to heaven. What does it mean to believe in God? We would encourage you to read “Searching For God.” It will give you a more detailed answer. May God bless your search.
