Bible Question:

How can I become like God?

Bible Answer:

There are several possible meanings to your question. Therefore, we will respond with two potential answers.

Do You Want To Be a God?

You cannot become like God. The Bible tells us that an angel named Lucifer once desired to become like God. In response, God threw him out of heaven. In his fallen state we know him as Satan or the Devil. Here is the Bible passage.

How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth . . . you said in your heart, “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, to the recesses of the pit.” (NASB) Isa. 14:12-16

Ezekiel 28:13-14 tells us that Lucifer was a beautiful angel and due to his own pride, he desired to become like God. He was proud. He wanted the glory and power of God. The Bible calls such a desire sin.

The Bible also tells us that there is only one God, and there will never be another God,

I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God besides Me. (NASB) Isa. 44:6

God is the first and He will also be the last. There are no other Gods. This message is repeated in Isa. 45:5, 15, 21 and Isa. 46:9. This means that you cannot become a god. There will be no other gods. This means that no Christian has ever become a god and none will ever be able to become one.

Do You Want to Live Like Jesus?

The second possible meaning to your question is that you desire to become more like Jesus each day. In order to become more like Jesus, our God, we must first accept Him as Lord and Savior and then want our pattern of life to change. God calls us again and again throughout the scripture to live a holy life – to change – to become holy. Most, not all of us, are trying or have tried to change by our own willpower. We cannot change on our own. Philippians 2:12-13 explains that we must want to grow spiritually, we must try to grow and we must depend on God to change us.

So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. (NASB) Philippians 2:12-13

This change requires that we must be willing to spend time regularly reading the Bible, praying, fleeing sin, and asking that the Holy Spirit fill our lives each day. This requires commitment and submission to God (Rom. 10:9). Conclusion:

The answer to your question is that there is no way you can become like God. But you can join Him in heaven some day if you will recognize that you are a sinner and believe in Him. What does it mean to believe in God? We would encourage you to read “Searching For God.” It will give you the answer. May God bless you search.
