Bible Question:

I have been married four times. I am a believer in Jesus Christ and currently married to my fourth husband. I am planning on staying married this time. Am I living in adultery? I have asked God for forgiveness since I have been married this time. None of my ex's are dead. Can you live in adultery, be married to a man, and live a godly life? I believe that I am forgiven for acting out of ignorance. I have been married so many times. My second marriage was to an evangelist and we remarried for the sake of the Word of God. That is why it is four times. I believe I am forgiven. Other Christians say that I am not because I have divorced so many times. Please help.

Bible Answer:

God only grants divorce with the right to remarry, with His blessing, for two reasons: 1) your partner had sexual relations with someone outside of the marriage, and 2) if your spouse is an unbeliever and he/she wants to leave. Otherwise, remarriage by either spouse results in adultery if the divorce was for any other reason. Does God forgive this sin? Yes, God forgives when our hearts sorrow over our sin. The apostle Paul made this statement in 2 Corinthians.

For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. (NASB) 2 Cor. 7:10

He states that there are types of sorrow. Some of us mourn the consequences of our sin and others mourn the fact that they committed the sin. The same is true about people and God. The one who sorrows that he or she is a sinner will seek God and His forgiveness. This will result in his/her salvation – the forgiveness of his/her sins. The forgiveness of our sins must start with God. We must believe that what the Bible said about Jesus is true and seek His forgiveness. He will then take over our life.

Conclusion:

If you were sincerely sorrowful about your sin when you confessed it to God, He has forgiven you.

For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more. (NASB) Jer. 31:34

Yes, you can live a godly life, but you can only do it with the power of the Holy Spirit. I would encourage you to read the article “How to be Filled with the Spirit.”
