Jesus Entered Jerusalem On A Donkey

Prophecy (480-470 B.C.)

See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.  Zechariah 9:9  (NIV)

Fulfillment

And the disciples . . . brought the donkey and the colt, and laid on them garments, on which he sat. And most of the multitude spread their garments in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road. Matthew 21:6-8  (NIV)

Comment

The prophecy in Zechariah 9:9 states that the Messiah, the king, would come riding on a donkey. Donkeys were sometimes ridden in times of peace (Judges 5:10), but kings normally used stallions. This was unexpected by those looking for a military Messiah. All four gospels (Matthew 21:1-9; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-44; John 12:12-19) state that Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey. Jesus fulfilled prophecies that were hundreds of years old, but the Jews missed Him because they were looking for the wrong type of Messiah.
