This self-inventory test uses Bible verses to help you answer the question, “Am I really a Christian?” We could say it is, “Am I a Christian Quiz” The test is not someone’s opinion. You will be comparing yourself to statements in Scripture to help you answer the question, “Am I really a Christian?” This self-inventory test examines the desires of your heart as well as your deeds. What is included in the test are signs that you are spiritually alive and going to heaven.
Therefore, please ask yourself if the following questions are true or false of you. When you are finished, see how to score yourself at the end.
True of False . . .
1. I believe that Jesus Christ is God.
Jesus stated in John 8:24, 58-59 that unless a person believes He is the great I AM – Jehovah himself, the person will die in their sins.
“Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” John 8:24 (NASB)
1 John 4:1-2; 5:5 and 5:20 echo that truth. 1 John 4:1-2 states we must believe that Jesus was God in human flesh. Anyone who says anything different is a false teacher. Only Christians believe Jesus is God.
2. I repented of my sins because I sin.
Jesus has warned everyone that He came to call sinners to repent and not good people. When you asked God to forgive your sins, did you repent of your sins?
I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. Luke 5:32 (NASB)
Romans 3:23 tells us that everyone of us is a sinner.
“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23 (NASB)
In Luke 18:19 Jesus said,
“Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. Luke 18:19 (NASB)
Jesus’ message is that no one does anything good enough to rescue themself from their sins and give them eternal life.
Therefore, do you admit you sin and are you repentant? Are you sorry for your sins? Only Christians grieve their sins.
3. I am trusting God to forgive my sins and take me to heaven.
John 3:16 says that we must believe in Christ in order to have our sins forgiven. The verse states, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
John 1:12 adds, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name . . .” This last statement reveals that each one of us must “receive, take or choose” Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. That includes believing who He claimed to be. Have you ever asked Him to forgive your sins?
. . . and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. Romans 10:9-10 (NASB)
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures . . . 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.
These verses tell us that a Christian is someone who is believing that Jesus died for their sins, was crucified on the cross, died and was then resurrected. A Christian is someone who believes these facts and has asked God to forgive their sins.
4. I desire to submit to Jesus as my Savior and Master.
Do you consider Jesus to be the master of your life? Romans 10:9-10 reveals that a true Christian will submit to Jesus as Lord.
. . . that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. Romans 10:9-10 (NASB)
In 1 Corinthians 12:3, we are told that only Christians will honestly submit to Jesus as Lord.
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is accursed”; and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:3 (NASB)
Do you truly strive to submit to Christ in everything? Only Christians submit to Christ.
5. I love Jesus and want to please Him.
1 Corinthians 16:22 tells us that if a person does not love Jesus, then he/she is divinely cursed. The Greek word for love is phileo in this verse and it refers to friendship love.
If anyone does not love the Lord, he is to be accursed. Maranatha. 1 Corinthians 16:22 (NASB)
1 Peter 1:8 describes an important characteristic of a Christian. It tells us that a Christian is one who loves Christ.
. . . may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him . . . 1 Peter 1:8 (NASB)
Many passages in the New Testament reveal that true Christians want to please God. 2 Corinthians 5:9 and Ephesians 5:10 very clearly teach that Christians will strive to please God.
Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. 2 Corinthians 5:9 (NASB)
. . . trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Ephesians 5:10 (NASB)
6. I am sinning less and less.
1 John 2:3-4 and 1 John 3:7-8 tell us that those who know Him, that is people who believe in Christ, will be striving to sin less and less.
“By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him . . . 1 John 2:3-4 (NASB)
Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:7-8 (NASB)
Christians do not want to sin and displease God. They will be striving to obey. Romans 8:13 says that believers will be putting to death the deeds of the body. Deeds of the body refers to sin. That is, believers will sin less and less.
7. The fruit of the Spirit is increasing in my life.
If the Holy Spirit is living within you, then the fruit of the Spirit will be becoming more obvious in you day after day.
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control . . .” Galatians 5:22 (NASB)
The growth of the fruit of the Spirit in a Christian’s life is best observed over a period of time – even a long period of time.
8. I want to be with other believers.
1 John 4:7-8, 20 says that those who are believers will be loving others and I John 4:20 says that those who say they love God but hate others are liars. Together these two verses teach us that a true follower of Jesus wants to be with other believers. Therefore, if you say that you want to be with other believers, but do not attend church when physically able to do so, then most likely you are not a Christian (1 John 2:19).
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 1 John 4:7-8 (NASB)
9. I experience answered prayers.
1 John 3:22 says that a follower of God will have their prayer requests answered because they please Him.
. . . whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. 1 John 3:22 (NASB)
The message from God to us is that He answers the prayers of believers, but not the prayers of unbelievers. So, the question is do you find that God normally grants your prayer requests? God sometimes will say “no” and at times asks us to wait awhile.
10. I understand the Bible.
An important test that must not be overlooked is that a Christian can read the Bible and understand it. Non-Christians cannot understand the Bible. That was Jesus’ message in John 14:21. 1 Corinthians 2:14-16 provides more explanation.
But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:14-16 (NASB)
Only Christians can understand the Bible, because the Holy Spirit only helps Christians understand it. However, a new Christian may have trouble understanding Scripture because they are just starting to learn it. But an older Christian should be able to understand Scripture when he or she studies it. Yet, if the Christian has not been studying Scripture, then this test cannot be of comfort to him or her because they should be able to answer this statement with a yes.
Scoring Your “Christian Self-Inventory Test”
In order to know if you are a Christian, total the number of times you marked a statement as True and as False. The test is divided into two parts.
Profession of Faith
First, statements #1, #2, #3 and #4 measure the profession of your faith. These are the essentials of a true Christian therefore, if you did not mark statements #1, #2, #3 and #4 as True, then you are definitely not a Christian.
#1 — Christians will mark this true.
#2 — Christians will mark this true.
#3 — Christians will mark this true.
#4 — Christians will mark this true.
Practical Evidence of Your Faith
Second, statements #5, #6, #7, #8, #9 and #10 measure additional evidences that your profession of faith is real as you are growing in your faith. They will become more and more evident as you obey the Word. Therefore, the more statements you marked as true, increases the possibility that you are a Christian. The fewer you marked, the less likely it is you are a Christian. How many of these characteristics describe you?
Spiritual growth is the result of the Holy Spirit changing a Christian over time and a Christian “working out their salvation” (Philippians 2:12-13). 1 John 2:12-14 will help you understand if you are a new Christian, a father of the father, or somewhere in between. This is an “Am I a Christian?” quiz. Accurate results require honesty.
Describing A Christian . . .
Every one of the statements describes the pattern of life of a Christian. Yet biblically, no Christian is absolutely good or righteous in ourselves. Christians still sin, even though Romans 5:1 says that a true Christian is justified by faith in Christ. Justification means the person has been declared to be righteous. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says that a Christian has the righteousness of Christ.
We could say a spiritually maturing Christian is someone who seeks to please God in everything they do in action, word, thought and motive (1 Thessalonians 4:1). They will strive to flee sin, read the Bible, pray, be filled with the Holy Spirit, confess their sins and share Christ with others.
