Bible Question:

I am getting confused about this name Zion. I want to know if this is the mountain where Jesus was crucified or not.

Bible Answer:

All four gospels state that Jesus was crucified on a cross on a hill called Golgotha or the Place of a Skull. The place He died in some way looked like a skull. John 19:20 and Hebrews 13:12 state that the place of His crucifixion was outside the city; it was “near the city.” But where did Jesus die? Where was Jesus crucified?

Where Did Jesus Die? — Golgotha — Place of the Skull

There are five passages in the New Testament about the location where Christ was crucified.  The passages are Matthew 27:33; Mark 15:21-22; Luke 23:33; John 19:17 and Hebrews 13:12.

And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull . . .  Matthew 27:33 (NASB)

They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross. Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. Mark 15:21-22 (NASB)

When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left. Luke 23:33  (NASB)

They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. John 19:17 (NASB)

Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate. Hebrews 13:12 (NASB)

Matthew 27:33 tells us that Jesus was led to Golgotha. John 19:17 states that Golgotha is the Hebrew word which means “skull.” The Greek name, kranion, means “Calvary.” Some believe the Church of the Holy Sepulcher has been built on Golgotha or the Place of the Skull. Luke 23:33 clearly states “The Skull” was where Jesus was crucified. Mark 15:21-22 indicates that as the soldiers were leading Jesus to the Place of a Skull, they encountered a man named Simon of Cyrene who was walking nearby from the country and forced him to carry the cross. This means  there was a road connecting the countryside to the city of Jerusalem. Hebrews 13:12 says that Jesus died outside the city. Where did Jesus die? Where was Jesus crucified? He died outside the city, near a road leading from the country on a hill called The Place of a Skull or Golgotha. It is called Calvary.

Where Christ Was Crucified — Calvary

Gordon’s Calvary has a skull embedded on the side of a hill. It is believed that this is the hill called Golgotha. Christians call it Calvary. There is a song some Christians sing called “I Believe In A Hill Called Mount Calvary.”

According to tradition, Jesus died on top of this hill which is where the Church of the Holy Sepulcher has been built.

Conclusion:

Jesus died on an “old rugged cross” on a hill called “The Skull.” He died there for you and me. He died so that our sins can be forgiven, so that we could be at peace with God, and some day live with God forever. If you are searching for God, you can find Him and have eternal life. But you must search for Him. When you find Him, you will enjoy a relationship with God and an abundant life.
