Bible Question:

Was Jesus created by God the Father? What does the Bible say?

Bible Answer:

The Bible teaches that the angels and humans were created by God. While humans can reproduce other humans (Genesis 1:26-28), the angels cannot reproduce angels. The angels cannot marry in heaven (Matthew 22:30). Scripture also teaches that Jesus was never created and is not an angel (Hebrews 1:6-9). But because of the translated wording in some Bible versions,  people have asked, “Was Jesus created by God?”  What follows explains that Jesus has always existed.

Was Jesus Created by God?

Was Jesus Created?

The answer to our question is found in many passages in Scripture. But we will start with John 1:1-3. Verse 1 says,

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  John 1:1 (NASB)

“The Word” is a term that refers to Jesus Christ according to John 1:14. Verse 14 says,

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us . . . John 1:14 (NASB)

It then becomes clear in the verses that follow that “the Word” refers to Jesus Christ. Therefore, John 1:1 tells us that Jesus Christ “was with God” and He was fully and completely God. For more information about the meaning of this verse, visit The Bible Teaches Jesus Is God – In the Gospels. John 1:1 is completely explained in that study.

The next verse, John 1:2, adds that Jesus was with God in the beginning.

He was in the beginning with God.  John 1:2 (NASB)

The Greek word for “beginning” is arche. It refers to the origin or the first in a series. That is, Jesus was not created at some moment in time after which God existed. God has always existed (John 5:26). This means that Jesus Christ could not have been created by God the Father.

Verse 3 adds,

All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. John 1:3 (NASB)

Here we are told that Jesus created everything. This means that Jesus was not created, since no man can create himself. Jesus could not have created Himself. We are also told that “nothing came into being” without Him. This also proves He was not created. Further, this means that Jesus has existed since eternity past. He is an eternal God.

Therefore, the answer to the question, “Was Jesus created?” is “No!” Jesus was never created.

Was Jesus Created By God?

Another important passage that reveals Jesus was not created is Colossians 3:16-17.

For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. Colossians 1:16-17 (NASB)

The “Him” in this passage refers to Jesus Christ.  This is an amazing passage. First, notice that we are told Jesus created everything in both the visible and invisible worlds. That is, anything that we see or do not see that exists was created by Jesus.

Second, we are told that He existed before “all things.” That is, He existed before anything was created. That means Jesus was a) never created and b) there was no God before Him who created Him.

Another important passage is 1 Corinthians 8:6. It says Jesus created everything.

. . . yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him. 1 Corinthians 8:6 (NASB)

These verses answer to the question, “Was Jesus Created By God?” The answer is, “No!” Jesus is God who has created everything that has been created. Jesus was never created. Jesus is God.

Jesus Is Our Eternal God

The last passage we will study is 1 Timothy 1:16-17.

Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:16-17 (NASB)

Here we are told that Jesus is the King eternal and He is immortal That is, Jesus is an eternal being. The Greek word for “eternal” is aionios. This Greek word means without beginning or end. That is, Jesus has no beginning and no end. 1 Timothy 1:17 reveals that the “beginning” mentioned in John 1:2 never had a start. Why? An eternal God has no beginning. The term “beginning” was used in reference to the beginning or the creation of the universe and our world.

Conclusion:

There are many passages that reveal Jesus is God (Isaiah 7:14; Micah 5:2; John 10:30). Both the Old and New Testaments teach that Jesus was and is our eternal God.
