Bible Question:

Should we review history and the myths to find the lost gods? The lost gods changed into idols. History changed into myth, and suddenly the myth changed into an uproar, when the people found that the gods were stolen. After one or two years the myth was dissolved. With the change of time, the gods changed into idols, which were no longer worshipped but put on sale. It is now time to review the myths and history. This is what my friends say. What do you say?

Bible Answer:

This is a very interesting statement that your friend made. The most striking comments are in the first and last lines: “The lost gods changed into idols” and “It is now time to review the myths and history.” If we are reviewing myths and history in order to discover the “lost gods,” then we need to ask the question, “Are the lost gods really gods?”

Shortly after our God Jesus Christ returned to heaven, one of His spokesmen, named Paul, told a group of people in the city of Ephesus “gods made with hands” or idols are not gods.

You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all. Acts 19:26 (NASB)

Sometime later Paul warned some people in the city of Corinth that when a person sacrifices to an idol, he is really sacrificing to demons.

What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?. . . but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God . . .  1cCorinthians 10:19-20 (NASB)(NASB)

Idols can appear to have power. Demons can be a hidden power behind an idol. The gods of the ancient times were really demons who pretended to be gods. They had power but it was limited.

How many real gods have existed and currently exist today? The answer is, “There is only one true God.” Listen to the prophet Isaiah,

. . . believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, and there will be none after Me. Isaiah 43:10 (NASB)

Thus says the LORD . . . the LORD of hosts: ‘I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God besides Me.’ Isaiah 44:6 (NASB)

I am the LORD, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God . . . Isaiah 45:5 (NASB)

Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established . . . Isaiah 46:9-10 (NASB)

Conclusion:

There are no lost gods, except for the demons who pretended to be gods. There is only one real, true God and He has always existed. He exists today and will always exist in the future. There is only one God and He is not lost. He was never lost. He is not a myth. He is real. Do you want to find Him? If you seriously desire to know Him, He has promised to let you find Him,

. . . you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you . . . Jeremiah 29:12-14 (NASB)

He will let you find Him when you search for Him with all your heart. If you do, you can find Him. I would encourage you to ask Him to reveal Himself. We would encourage you to read Searching For God and to study the series Solid Roots.
