Another Reality

Bible Question:

I have a problem with certain movies such as the Matrix which depict another possible reality. It has really given me faith struggles. How can I grow in faith to get past this?

Bible Answer:

The MATRIX is an interesting movie. It describes two kinds of people: those who are living in reality, and those who are living in a fantasy life or another reality. The fantasy life is fed directly into the minds of comatose, living people by a master computer. These people live a fantasy in their minds and that is all. Their real persons appear to be asleep. Do you wonder “Are we living in another reality like the Matrix?”

Are We Living In Another Reality?

So, are you wondering if the life you are living is a fantasy life and if your experiences are real? Are we living in another reality? The answer is, “Yes, there are two worlds: a visible and an invisible one.” The visible one is the one you experience day-to-day and the invisible one you will experience some day. But both are real. All of us are born into this physical world spiritually dead. The following verse reveals that truth.

And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved) . . . Ephesians 2:1-5 (NASB)

Unbelievers live their lives in ignorance believing that there is nothing more to this life than the life they have experienced since birth. They are content to believe that their perception of life is all that there is. They are spiritually dead men and women walking around on a planet that their Creator made, with no understanding that their real life begins when they die. What they believe about Jesus Christ in this life determines what happens to them after death.

Sadly, some people do not believe that there is something beyond this life – a spiritual realm. But those who believe in Jesus Christ will die someday and live in a new reality. There is another reality. It will be heaven or hell. Only by believing that Jesus Christ died to forgive a person’s sin can a person go to heaven. God warns us in Acts 4:12 that only through Jesus Christ can we be saved or rescued from hell.

And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved. (NASB) Acts 4:12

Conclusion

There are two spiritual realities: the reality of living eternally in hell and the reality of living eternally in heaven. Eternal life comes through Jesus Christ. Those who reject Christ will live in hell. The MATRIX is a wake-up call in the sense that it will eventually result in some individuals realizing there is another aspect to life. Some will sense there is something other than this world – a spiritual world. There are two realities. God has proven that He is real and exists for those who are willing to believe Jesus is God, Lord, and Savior. Jesus performed miracles that historians have written about.
