Bible Question:

How can I know the Spirit of God has come on me?

Bible Answer:

It is important to know the Bible tells us the Holy Spirit lives inside every true Christian. He indwells or starts living inside of us (Romans 8:11) when a man or woman believes in Jesus or starts trusting Jesus to forgive their sins. This what Ephesians 3:17 says.

. . . so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith . . . (NASB) Ephesians 3:17

The Spirit Has Come

The Bible also tells us that when this happens the Holy Spirit places us into the body of Jesus. To say we are in the “body of Christ” means we are Christians.

. . . or by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. (NASB) 1 Corinthians 12:12

So the Holy Spirit not only starts living inside of us at the moment we start trusting Jesus to forgive our sins, but we also become part of a new family called Christians or the “body of Christ.”

Living Inside

Scripture tells that we can know we are real Christians when can see the effect of the Holy Spirit in our life. Listen to the following verses,

However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. (NASB) Romans 8:9

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (NASB) Romans 8:16

By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. (NASB) 1 John 4:13

So how can we know that the Spirit is living inside of us? Listen to these verses.

Therefore I make known to you, that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is accursed”; and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. (NASB) 1 Corinthians 12:3

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (NASB) Galatians 5:22-23

We can know the Holy Spirit is inside us when we really mean the words, “Jesus is Lord” of my life – when Jesus really is my Lord – when I obey Him! We can also know the Holy Spirit is inside us when we see love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness and self-control growing more and more in our life. It is a growth process, and these things become more obvious with time. This is the real key! This is the message of Galatians 5.

Coming Upon Us

So you ask, “How can I know the Spirit of God has come on me?” The answer to your question is found in Ephesians 5:18.

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. (NASB) Ephesians 5:18-21

The evidence of the Spirit coming on us is described in this verse. It is a command and not an option. The Greek implies that it is something we are to be constantly doing. We are commanded to always be filled with the Holy Spirit. What is the evidence? The evidence of the Holy Spirit coming on us is singing, real worship, peace in our heart, and an attitude of thanksgiving.
