| Bible Question: I have a question about discernment. I do not seem to have any, but I believe that I am a Christian only because of what Jesus Christ has done for me! So, I have been asking the Lord for the gift of discernment. Help! Bible Answer: While there is no spiritual gift related to "discernment" we have concluded that you are referring to "discernment" as mentioned in the book of Proverbs. Since there is a spiritual gift called the "discerning of spirits," you might be interested in reading a previous question about that gift. You have asked the Lord for a special blessing. Proverbs 2:3 gives us this advice about discernment.
Have you ever searched and searched for something valuable? Years ago, I did just that. One day, I had lost my car keys and so I searched and searched for them. I became extremely frustrated and tired because I would not give up my search for them. Finally, my wife helped me find them. She always seems to be able to find them when I cannot. That is the picture of how we are to search and to seek for discernment - as if it were extremely valuable. Then you will find discernment, and she will lead you to an awesome relationship with God. You will begin to highly respect and honor God, and you will start learning more and more about God. You will find that God is all you really care about. Conclusion: What a great request you have been making of God. Every morning (unless I forget) I ask God to give me wisdom, knowledge, discernment, and understanding. I have been asking for years and God has granted my request. That daily request has taken me into a very meaningful and loving relationship with God. He is my friend as well as my God.
