Bible Question: I
am confused by this statement on your home page, "but God who
came in human flesh to die so that we can live." If this is
so, was there no God for the three days that Jesus was dead?
Bible Answer: This
is a great question because the answer reveals who Jesus really is.
Jesus is BOTH God and man. He was, is, and will always be God. But
He was not always a man.
The Mystery. One
day John the Baptist was preaching to a crowd and said this,
| |
This
was He of whom I said, "He who comes after me has a higher
rank than I, for He existed before me.” (NASB) John
1:15 |
John
was referring to Jesus. He said that Jesus existed before John did.
Now this is a surprising statement, because Jesus was born as a human
baby after John was born. That is, John the Baptist was born first.
The medical doctor Luke records the events about his birth in Luke
1:57-66. Dr. Luke then tells us that Jesus was born in Luke
2:1-20. So why did John the Baptist say that Jesus existed before
he did? Because Jesus is God and He has always existed.
Did
God Die?
Jesus was man in that He had flesh and bone in human form. There
is a previous question at this site which we would encourage you
to
read.
It is
"How are we to believe
that Jesus is equal to God?" When Jesus died,
His body died and not His spirit. In fact, all of us are
eternal
beings, and our
spirits
never
die. Only the physical body dies. Listen
to this
passage,
| |
And
these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous
into eternal life. (NASB) Matt. 25:46 |
We
will spend eternity either with God or away from God in the Lake
of Fire. It is not a question of, "Am I going to
be alive?" The
question is, "Where am I am going to live?"
Conclusion: Jesus
was God and man. He had to be a man so that a physical death could
occur. He had to be God so that Jesus could be a sinless man (Heb.
4:15) - the perfect man. The " .
. . Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" (John
1:29). When He died, His spirit
went to heaven (Luke 23:43). Three days later His body was resurrected
by the Holy Spirit and He rejoined His body -
an immortal body. Why did God do this? The
answer is located at this link.
