Bible Question: In
John 10:16 Jesus said, "I have other sheep, too, in another
fold. I must bring them also." Where is that other fold?
Bible Answer: The
passage you refer is as follows:
| |
I
have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring
them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become
one flock with one shepherd. (NASB) John 10:16 |
Jesus
had just explained to His disciples that He was the good shepherd
in verse 14, when He tells them that He has more sheep in another
fold.
More
Sheep. But who are these other sheep? The answer is hinted at in the next
chapter after the high priest, Caiaphas, suggested that it would be good for
Jesus to die for the nation. He did not know that he had just prophesied by the
Holy Spirit.
| |
And
this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that
year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
and not for that nation only, but that also he should gather
together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
(NASB) John 11:51-52 |
Who
is this other flock? The English form of the Greek word for nation
is ETHNOS. It also means "race." Jesus is saying that His
other "fold" is the Gentiles. The Jews taught that there
are only two types of people: Jews and Gentiles. Jesus is declaring
that He is the Great Shepherd for all the saints - Jews and Gentiles.
One
Shepherd & One Sheep. During
His earthly ministry, Jesus healed not just the Jews but also the Gentiles. He
did not exclude Gentiles nor talk only to Jews. Jesus ministered to both. In
one of His last great sermons, He told His disciples that people from every nation
- Jew and Gentile - would go either to eternal punishment or eternal life. (Matt.
25:31-46). There were two choices for both groups.
Notice that in John 10:16, Jesus said that there will
be only one shepherd and only one flock. There will not be two folds but only
one! There is not a shepherd for Jews and another one for the Gentiles. Romans
9 tells us that there is only one flock or fold - My People.
| |
And
He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels
of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory, even us,
whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from
among Gentiles. As He says also in Hosea, “I WILL CALL
THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, ‘MY PEOPLE,’ AND
HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, ‘BELOVED.’ AND IT SHALL
BE THAT IN THE PLACE WHERE IT WAS SAID TO THEM, ‘YOU
ARE NOT MY PEOPLE,’ THERE THEY SHALL BE CALLED SONS
OF THE LIVING GOD.” (NASB) Rom. 9:23-26 |
Conclusion: Jesus
is the Great Shepherd of the sheep - our Friend of friends.
| |
Now
the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the
great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of
the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every
good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing
in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory
forever and ever. Amen. (NASB) Heb. 13:20-21 |
