Bible Question: What
is the will of the Father in Matt. 7:21?
Bible Answer: A
previous study entitled, "Seeking
Direction" will help you understand the will of God and
provide some important background information for the answer of your
question.
Not
Many Ways. In
Matthew 7:21 Jesus has given us a very serious warning.

Not
everyone who says to Me, "Lord, Lord," will enter
the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father
who is in heaven. (NASB) Matt. 7:21 |
No
one is going to heaven unless he or she is doing the Father's will.
What is the will of the Father? The previous study "Seeking
Direction" explains at least five "wills of God" that
appear in the New Testament. But only Christians can do the will
of God. That means the most important will of the Father is . . .

And
this is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His
Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded
us. (NASB) 1 John 3:23
And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other
name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we
must be saved. (NASB) Acts 4:12 |
God
desires that every man and woman believe in Jesus Christ. There are
not many ways to God. There is only one way. Only by believing
in Jesus Christ will any person go to heaven.
Mistaken. Jesus'
statement is a great surprise because He says that a person might
even do miracles and cast out demons in the name of God and still
not get into heaven.

Many
will say to Me on that day, "Lord, Lord, did we not
prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons,
and in Your name perform many miracles?" “And
then I will declare to them, "I never knew you; DEPART
FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS." (NASB) Matt.
7:22-23 |
Jesus
even tells us in Matthew 12:27 that the sons of the Jewish leaders
were casting out demons. Were they casting out demons in God's name?
Did they believe in Jesus? The answer is most likely no. Jesus is
making a significant statement. You may think that you are doing
miracles in God's name, but that does not mean you belong to Him.
Conclusion: The
only ones who are going to heaven are those who really believe
that Jesus is God, died for our sins, and returned to life. How
you live your life is the proof that you really believe and depend
on Jesus to forgive your sins. How you live your life or the things
you do - even miracles and casting out demons - will not take you
to heaven. God wants all men and women to be with Him in heaven when
they die. Only those who believe in Jesus and are depending on Him
for salvation will go there, and they are the ones who will do the
will of the Father. God
wants an intimate relationship with you. If you respond to God
and He is really your friend, you will do His will. |
