Bible Question: If we are truly Christians, then why don't we address our God
by His proper name (Jehova)? It was the Sadducees and the Pharisees
who removed Gods personal name from the Bible. How would you feel
if someone removed your name and replaced it with what really
amounts to nothing more than a mere title (LORD)? We are duly
warned in Revelation of the seriousness incurred if anyone adds
to or removes words from the Bible. God intended that his name
be known throughout the earth. Jesus would have pronounced and
glorified His father's name on numerous occasions. Therefore as
Christians don't you agree that we have a moral obligation to
restore his divine name?
Bible Answer: The Hebrew word for Jehovah is . This is His name. The best literal Hebrew-to-English translation is YHWH. This is the Tetragrammaton. There are no vowels in the word. So how do we pronounce it? The correct pronunciation of the name has been lost over time. Today, no one is 100% confident as to how to pronounce it, since the Jews regarded the name as unspeakable and so the pronunciation has not been passed on.
So, what is His proper name? How do we pronounce it? We do
not really know. But we do know how to write it in the Hebrew
language. His name is . In another language, His name will be translated differently, so it will be spelled and pronunced differently. Was Hebrew the language of Adam and Eve? Is it possible that Adam and Eve called Him by a different name, since God changed everyone's language after the Tower of Babel (Gen. 11:9)? By what name did Adam call God?
God has been called by many names. In the New Testament Jesus
refers to God the Father as "Abba Father,"

And He was saying, "Abba! Father! All things are possible for
Thee; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what Thou
wilt." (NASB) Mark 14:36 |
Galatians 4:6 says the Holy Spirit cries "Abba Father" in the hearts of Christians. This name is acceptable to God - it is not the name YHWH. "Lord" is an English word and not a word given to us by the Sadducees nor by the Pharisees. It is our translation of YHWH. God is not offended by translation. He made all of the different languages. What God desires is that we trust Jesus completely with our whole hearts to forgive us of our sins.
Conclusion: Remember, Jesus and the Holy Spirit called God the Father, "Abba
Father." God has many different names in the Bible. |
