Bible Question: Why should I read the Bible?

Bible Answer: Some men and women read the Bible because they are taking a college class or they are intellectually interested in the Bible. The Bible is a spiritual book. It is sacred because it contains God's communication to us. Consequently, there are three major spiritual reasons why we should read the Bible.
Three Reasons To Read. The first and major reason to read the Bible is to learn more about God. The prophet Moses longed to know more about God and so he asked,

Now therefore, I pray Thee, if I have found favor in Thy sight, let me know Thy ways, that I may know Thee. (NASB) Exodus 33:13

Moses did not have the Bible, but we do. Today, we can read the scriptures and learn about God by observing what He does, His attitudes and actions.
    The second major reason for reading the Bible is to learn about Jesus Christ and salvation. Salvation is like a mystery story. The prophets of old and the angels were in a sense playing treasure hunt with what they knew. The prophets were writing scripture and they did not understand some the things they were writing,

As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful search and inquiry, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven - things into which angels long to look. (NASB) 1 Peter 1:10-12

The Bible teaches us about salvation and Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 3:15 says, "the sacred writings which are able to give you wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." In Luke 24:27, Jesus tells us the scriptures speak of Him. This the second reason to read the Bible.
    The third reason is to grow spiritually,

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (NASB) 2 Timothy 3:16-17

When a person becomes a Christian, 1 John 2:12-14 says he/she is a spiritual baby. This same passage also reveals that we can never grow spiritually without reading and studying the Bible. Ephesians 4:11-16 helps us to understand that spiritual growth involves knowing the Bible. The goal of this website is to help people understand that they are sinners, that they need God's forgiveness, and then to grow in their understanding of God.
Conclusion: For a Christian who has a close walk with God, Psalms 42:1-2 says it all,

As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for Thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. (NASB) Psalms 42:1-2
