Bible Question: I was involved in a discussion today that I was perplexed about
and I am hoping for some clarification. I was talking to a friend
and he told me that in his high school (private Lutheran school)
if a female is visibly pregnant at the time of graduation she
is not allowed to walk across the platform. I want to know why,
if all sins are truly equal, we as Christians look down on people
that take part in premarital sex. Are all sins truly equal? If
so, isn't this implying, if not saying, that premarital sex is
worse than any of the sins that we commit each day?
Bible Answer: Sin is sin as far as God is concerned, BUT that is not all of
the story.
Some people believe there are "white lies" or sins and then there
are real sins. They have the idea that there are various degrees
of seriousness to sin. In James 2:10-11, God tells us that if
we commit one sin by not keeping one of the ten commandments,
then as far as He is concerned, we have violated all of them,

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point,
he has become guilty of all. (NASB) James 2:10 |
This is serious. We have all sinned at least once. God tells us
that He considers sin to be lawlessness (1 John 3:4), that is,
sin is to disobey Him. Have you ever committed one sin?
It is interesting that some people, including Christians,
reject others who commit sexual sins such as adultery, premarital
sex, pornography, and homosexual behaviors for example. But the
vast majority, if not all of us, have committed adultery in our
mind according to Matt 5:28. Most adults, if not all, are guilty
of sexual sin. Have you ever committed sexual sin in your mind
or physically? God forgives sexual sin. There is no sin that God cannot and will not forgive (1 Tim. 1:15-16) if one looks to Jesus to forgive. God forgives premarital sex. Yet, we ignore the fact that most couples who have had premarital sex struggle later in their marriages towards each other because of that activity. The Bible gives us a warning about sexual sin. For some reason, sexual sins cause tremendous emotional hurt and pain.

Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside
the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. (NASB)
1 Corinthians 6:18 |
Does 1 John 5:16 tell us there is a sin a Christian can commit that God will not forgive? The answer is no, It is a sin that "leads to death." We do not know if this "sin that leads to death" is a single sin common to everybody or a unique sin for each individual Christian. Apparently, if a Christian commits this sin, God will remove him from this life. What is it? The passage says do not ask.
Conclusion: Sin is sin but sexual sins cause tremendous emotional pain. God
warned us about this in 1 Cor. 6;18. But God has called us to
love everyone. Since Jesus loves all of us, we should too! |
