Bible Question:

Were Adam and Eve capable of repenting of their sin? If so, did Adam and Eve go to heaven?

Bible Answer:

Adam and Eve were capable of repenting of their sin just as you or I can. However, scripture does not tell us if they did. The New Testament reveals that Eve was deceived by the Evil One and sinned.

But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. (NASB) 2 Cor. 11:3

Even though she did not realize at first what she was doing, she was responsible. If you violate the law in a foreign country, the policeman will still arrest you. But Adam was not deceived.

And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. (NASB) 1 Tim. 2:14

Adam knew what he was doing. Why did he sin? Again, scripture does not tell us. We can guess that he did not want Eve to be by herself in her sin and decided to join her, but we do not know.

In Heaven?

Scripture does not tell us if Adam and Eve repented of their sin, and scripture does not tell us if they are in heaven. However, scripture does reveal that God made a promise of a Savior who would come some day. The promise is found in Gen. 3:15. This verse is addressed to Satan.

And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her seed;
He shall bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise him on the heel. (NASB) Gen. 3:15

The promise was one of conflict between Satan and Jesus Christ. Satan would eventually lose; he did when Jesus died on the cross and then returned to life (Heb. 2:14). Adam and Eve would not have struggled with the question, “Does God exist?” They knew that God existed. Since they knew of the promise of a coming savior (Gen. 3:15), Jesus Christ, it would seem that they would have believed with repentance over their sin and submission to God. I personally believe that Adam and Eve will be in heaven, but scripture does not say that.

Conclusion:

While we do not know if Adam and Eve repented of their sin or went to heaven, 1 John 5:13 says that we can know if we have eternal life. It only requires that we believe in Jesus Christ. This type of belief submits itself to God.
